A chef and an assassin?

In what is described as kung fu meets Asian street food, Netflix’s Wu Assassins features an anticipated new series with Asian leads — albeit, at first glance, with some stereotypical traits.

Based on the trailer released Tuesday, the upcoming show follows The Raid star Iko Uwais as a chef who becomes entangled with the Chinese Triad in modern day San Francisco, in pursuit of deadly ancient powers known as the “Wu Xing.”

As supernatural elements blend with martial arts, the first two episodes are reportedly directed by acclaimed Hong Kong action director Stephen Fung. With Uwais also serving as the show’s lead martial arts choreographer and stunt coordinator, at the very least, the action and fight scenes in the film should be — for a lack of a better term — kick ass.

Also starring alongside Uwais are Byron Mann (Altered Carbon, Skyscraper), Li Jun Li (Quantico), Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), and Lewis Tan (Into The Badlands, Deadpool 2) — as well as newcomers Celia Au and Lawrence Kao. The series will debut on Netflix on August 8.
