Art lovers and activists, rejoice! The feature-length documentary, AI WEIWEI: YOURS TRULY, will have its New York Premiere at this year’s DOC NYC.
Directed by Cheryl Haines, the documentary follows the story of Weiwei, the Chinese contemporary artist and activist, known for being openly critical of the Chinese Government’s stance on democracy and human rights.
The film starts at @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz, the interactive art exhibition created by the artists, following his imprisonment by the Chinese government for his work and political activism. Working alongside curator Haines, the federal penitentiary was transformed to spark conversation around justice, freedom of expression, and human rights.
YOURS TRULY is a call to action through a simple act, extending the reach of Ai Weiwei’s art and urgent call for freedom from injustice and oppression as visitors pick up a pen and personalize the core principles of global human rights.

Since its creation, the exhibition has been visited by over 900,000 people. For those unable to check it out in person, the documentary allows viewers to get a glimpse of the installation, while delving deeper into specific featured works.
